Why is it so difficult to buy an ordinary road bicycle nowadays?

I want to buy a bike.
An ordinary bike.
Not a sports bike.
Not a BMX bike.
Not a racing bike.
Not a mountain bike.
Not a folding bike.
Not a clowns bike with springs and suspension everywhere.

Hear hear! I agree! I have searched and searched for the bicycle that you describe – you have to pay about £400 pounds sterling. In the end I just gave up and bought a vintage one. Much nicer too!

I hate most of the bicycles made now. They look horrible – I still think a narrow-tubed steel frame is nicest. I might be able to help you if you email me.

Good luck! I suppose try your best to test drive one before you buy so that you can get an idea of comfort. Try and get one with a comfy seat and that can be adjusted for your height.

The Folding Bicycle Solution

In case you are like a lot of Londoners, you’ll have problems finding a safe and dry place to put your bike at home. The small house refuses to budge one more inch, and also the street seems to be the place bikes get left to find new owners. Typical to most of models is that the handling is a bit more responsive than on a full-size bike, and that can take some getting used to. It is not suggested that you ride a folding bike without any hands or try any cute stunts. Gears on small-wheeled foldable bikes are higher to compensate, but limited gearing on some models may slow you down. If that is a major issue for you, you might like to look more toward higher end “performance” foldable bikes. If you plan to take many trips that utilize transit, a bike that folds quickly and compactly may be best for you. In case you are a tall rider, you may want to check out how each type of folding bike can adjust to fit you.

As with any buy, consider how you plan to use the bike and try to find the one that matches your requirements best. Understand that you often get what you pay for and that a lower-quality bike may make you wish you had got a new better bike in the first place. The greater quality folding bikes may seem highly-priced, but considering that a typical non-folding bike takes up more than 20 feet square in an apartment, you will save perhaps $10,000 over ten years by being able to get a slightly smaller home. Which means you can’t afford not to get a good-quality folding bike.

Remember that folding bikes aren’t for the shy. You will be asked about your bike constantly on the streets of London, so get ready to become a spokesperson for whatever bike you choose. Folding bikes are apparently the most thrilling sight many Londoners have ever seen!

How do I make my bike last and how long will it last?

I have decided on a Dahon Speed D7 folding bike, I guess it is of a decent quality, but I wonder how much it can handle and what sort of care can help or is neccessary…such as the rain, cold and washing care. Does it pay to get a more expensive model in this regard. Thanks.

DO NOT use “WD-40″ on any bicycle. For chain lube, go to any bike shop, there are several good brands and they can show you the right way to do it.

Don’t leave it outside. It’ll get rusty and stolen.

Before you ride it, pick it up so both wheels are about an inch off the ground, then drop it. If you hear any “clunck” or any rattles, figure out where it’s coming from. They can get un-safe real fast.

Get a basic road kit at a bike shop and even if you have to pay, take a class to learn how to do simple repairs like flat tires and basic tightening and adjustments. Also get a tire pump (use it to actually, completely air up a tire before you buy it… )

It’s a good bike, if you don’t abuse it, it’ll last for decades with just occasional replacement parts and tuneups.

Oh, and wear a helmet every time you ride. Take it from me, cracking your skull on the concrete is no fun.

I don’t think you can find an “inexpensive” folding mountain bike. You are paying for several different technologies that are not cheap. Who would want to ride a “cheap” folding mtn. bike, right? Seems scary.

Dahon folding or mountain?

I am on a budget of about $150. I want a bike for exercising on a paved trail about 4-6 miles that I will ride (hopefully) 3 times a week. I am limited on space and would prefer to have a folding (due to convenience) but could accomodate a regular sized bike. Should I buy a used $140 foldable Dahon or invest that in a mountain (or other) bike?

The Dahon is a great bike and at that price you need to snatch it up before someone else does.

The nice thing about a Dahon is if eventually you want to combine car and bike commuting you could because you can throw it in the trunk and go. Plus, if you ever do a Europe trip then you can easily lug that on all the trains and stuff in the EU.
